Electric Buses: Fond memories of catching the old electric buses going downtown on Grand River,
the sparking electricity had a unique sound. Every once in awhile someone would double park a car
on Grand River and the old electric buses just could not swing out far enough to get around the cars.
The horn would sound and the owner of the car would come running out to move the car.
We had to be pretty young when the electric bus made its last run and the overhead grid work of
power lines came down. Our family made a yearly outing in December to downtown Detroit at night to
walk the perimeter of Hudson's and enjoy the window displays. Every year a different theme for the displays.
We were not aware at the time that those would be the last good years for downtown Detroit, the historic
department stores, Kern's, Crowley's and Hudson's would soon start closing one by one. Followed by the
exodus of other retailers joining the trend toward suburban malls. For us west side residents,
Northland became the place to shop.
