A fun night for the RHS ’68 alum group nucleus, the evening of Dec 19, doing “Dinner and a Movie”. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
Unfortunately, this particular night happened to be the FIRST adverse driving conditions of winter, with a slippery snowfall making the roads treacherous and challenging. That in itself may have prevented others from joining us at El Nibble Nook for a 5:30pm dinner. I know, cuz we traveled from Belleville up I-275 which was bumper to bumper due to an accident along the 6 mile road exit, delaying our arrival till after 6pm. Ugh. Hated it.
We had a ‘new’ member join the group, someone who has not participated in an RHS ’68 alum event since the 30 year reunion: Mz Peggy Barbeito, and her family were present. AWESOME to see Peggy again. Peggy joined the Facebook group recently, but I don’t have her email address yet. I will soon and add her to our master list.
I thought the food at El Nibble Nook was tasty…served hot with generous portions. Genuine Mexican cuisine. Yummy! The waitresses busted their butts makin sure everyone was delighted with everything. GOOD choice of restaurant, Tom Woodside!!
The Redford Theatre, as mentioned, was outstanding, featuring the original 1929 pipe organ prelude, a short Laurel and Hardy silent flick, and “A Christmas Story” movie starring Darrin McGavin. It was real nostalgia standing in a place I hadn’t been in since the mid 1960’s…kind of eerie and a bit of deja-vu too. After arriving and meeting in the lobby, our RHS entourage darted for the seats in the balcony, where we enjoyed the organ prelude playing Christmas music, then the movie. My only complaint is the seats are a bit tight for my wide girth, in my opinion. Of course, my own fault, as I am a MUCH bigger guy than I was in high school. Oh well. The concession stand was in the same place it has been forever, serving hot buttered popcorn and the typical variety of candies and cold pop. Santa was there too! Following the show, a couple couples got down on the main level to see the organ up close and roam about a bit. Fun!
We’ll have to do this again, eh?
The RHS ’68 group will continue to gather on a quarterly basis, and encourage YOU joining us. Great fun, great times, good friends from the Class of 1968! Stay tuned with us on our RHS ’68 group on Facebook link:

The Redford Theatre opened on January 27, 1928 as a neighborhood movie house. It was billed as "America's Most Unique Suburban Playhouse." The theatre, with its three story grand foyer and full-size stage, has been in continuous operation ever since. This was fortunate, since it enabled the Redford and its theatre organ to escape the ravages of neglect that resulted in the destruction of many movie palaces.
The Redford Theatre, with its historic original 3 manual, 10 rank Barton Theatre Pipe Organ, has served as a Metro Detroit entertainment center since it opened on January 27, 1928.
The non-profit Motor City Theatre Organ Society owns and operates the Redford Theatre at 17360 Lahser Road, Detroit, MI 48219. Enjoy the classic film series, organ concerts or your special event, enhanced by this beautifully restored setting.
The Redford Theatre is operated by an all-volunteer staff. Proceeds from programs presented at the Redford are used to restore and maintain the theatre building.
The Motor City Theatre Organ Society is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.
Redford High 1968 Alum have found memories and often chat and email about it
I had the pleasure of working at the Redford Theater the summer of 1967 along with 2 other RH 68ers; William (Bill) Morehead and Tyrone (Ty) Hedblad. As I remember it, the only 2 movies that they showed that summer were James Bonds "You only Live Twice" and "The Graduate". After seeing those movies so many times I still remember most of the dialog. The Redford brings many happy moments from a bygone era.
